Episode 33: All In Music Service


Speaking of the Arts is pleased to welcome Wulf Muller to the show. Wulf is a highly seasoned veteran of the recording industry. In 1999, Wulf became Vice President of International Marketing Classics & Jazz for Universal Music. Here he was responsible for International marketing efforts for all Classics and Jazz priorities worldwide, as well as all local signings on the Emarcy Jazz and Emarcy Classics labels.

In 2003 the role of A&R for the Emarcy Label was added to his responsibilities and it was during this period that Wulf signed acts like Madeleine Peyroux, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Michael Brecker, and John Scofield.

In 2010, Wulf started a new company called All-In-Music Service – a consulting company for the music industry. Universal Music Group International soon became his first client. At the same time, All-In-Music Service acts as the European tour co-ordinator for artists like Branford Marsalis, James Carter, Jane Monheit and Karrin Allyson. In 2012, All-In-Music Service signed an exclusive jazz A&R agreement with Sony Classical International to revive and build the historic OKeh jazz label.

Episode 32: Panos Panay, Founder of the Berklee Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship


Panos Panay is the founder and managing director of the Berklee Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship (BerkleeICE). Prior to this, Panos created Sonicbids, the leading platform for bands to book gigs and market themselves online, building a subscriber network of 550,000 bands and 35,000 promoters from more than 100 countries. He led the company as CEO for 13 years, from its inception until after its successful acquisition in a deal backed by Guggenheim Partners.

Panos is also the co-founder of the Open Music Initiative, which has brought together more than 140 leading music, media, technology industry organizations, and academic institutions to create a blockchain-based open protocol for uniform identification of musical rights owners and creators. (We will get into what all of that means during the episode).

At Berklee, his work and approach to entrepreneurial and innovation pedagogy builds heavily on the concepts of music thinking, and in particular jazz, as a catalyst for creative breakthroughs in business, life, and art; and he has spearheaded multi-disciplinary collaborations between Berklee and MIT; the design firm IDEO; and Brown University. Panos writes frequently about startups and entrepreneurship for blogs and publications such as Forbes, WSJ Accelerators, and Fast Company; and guest lectures and speaks at many universities and events around the world.

Some of his many awards include: Fast Company’s “Fast 50” honor; Inc Magazine’s “Inc 500”; Mass Hi-Tech All Stars; Berklee College’s Distinguished Alumnus Award; Boston Business Journal’s “40 under 40” and BostInno’s 50 on Fire. Sonicbids and Panos were also profiled in a chapter in the Financial Times-published book Outsmart by best-selling author Jim Champy.Panos is a native of Cyprus, and holds a Music Business/Management degree from Berklee College of Music.

Episode 31: How we are giving back!

Happy New Year Everyone! This is Mike Epstein and welcome to Speaking of the Arts. At the end of 2016 I made a special announcement on behalf of our booking agency, Epstein & Company. In case you missed it, starting in 2017, we have decided to give back in the form of a special fund for music students who would otherwise not be able to afford private lessons. This means that from now on, every time you book one of our artists, you are helping to empower a music student in need.

To accomplish this, we are partnering with an organization called The MusicLink Foundation and today’s guest just so happens to be the founder and director, Dr. Joanne Haroutounian. Before we begin the episode, here’s a little about Joanne – She currently serves on the George Mason University piano faculty and coordinates the various piano pedagogy programs as well as the Music Education Graduate Seminars covering topics concerning artistic and musical talent development.

Active internationally as a consultant in the areas of piano, music, artistic thinking, creativity, and the arts, Joanne regularly presents sessions at MTNA and NAGC conferences. She recently was plenary speaker at the Pacific Asian Conference on Giftedness in Singapore and the International Symposium on Gifted Arts in Seoul Korea, speaking on musical talent identification and gifted/arts education for all students.

Joanne is well known for editing and writing almost 30 teaching publications including Explorations in Music, a comprehensive curriculum in theory, ear training, analysis, and creative composition. Her pedagogy text, Fourth Finger on Bb: Effective Strategies for Teaching Piano is a major text for college pedagogy programs across the country.

The MusicLink Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Arlington Virginia with a twenty five year program history of developing the talents of promising students in financial need across the country. MusicLink professional teachers have provided over 450,000 hours of instruction to over 6500 students in 50 states and 4 Canadian provinces. equivalent to over $11million of in-kind service to the program.

Episode 30: Jacob Yoffee on Composing for Feature Films

Jacob Yoffee is currently the Resident Composer for the American Studio Orchestra and is a full time concert & film composer based in Los Angeles. Jacob’s music has been featured in the trailer campaigns for Star Wars : The Force Awakens, The Jungle Book, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Chronicles of Riddick and Kubo & the Two Strings. He is known for his work on MTV’s hit drama ‘Finding Carter’, and Showtime’s award-winning ‘Time of Death’ series.

Currently, Jacob is scoring ‘Andi Mack’ a new series for Disney and he is also working on the ad campaign for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Jacob’s concert music has been performed in several cities in the US as well as abroad at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Royal Academy of Music and on BBC Radio. As a performer, Jacob was signed to Inner Circle Music Records in 2007, releasing his debut album, “Dead Reckoning.”

Jacob holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Composition & Jazz Performance and a Master’s degree from New York University.
